Remediation at the Skykomish School - 2011
  • Construct temporary school facilities to be occupied during the 2011-2012 school year.
  • Underpin school building using mini-piles, remove windows and selected walls on first floor and support structure using bracing. Excavate free product and soil exceeding cleanup levels to the extent feasible without impairing school structure.
  • Restore school building and perform protective vapor mitigation measures.
Excavate the Skykomish School yard and west end of the levee - 2011
  • Excavate all free product and soil in the Skykomish School yard exceeding cleanup levels.
  • Excavate any lead or arsenic contaminated soils up to 15 feet below grade with concentrations exceeding cleanup levels.
  • Excavate free product and soil exceeding cleanup levels on Shawver properties and West River Drive right-of-way.
  • Temporarily relocate Shawver shop and wood shed.
  • Temporarily close West River Drive near Shawver’s and reroute traffic to Railroad Avenue.
Excavate the Northwest Developed Zone
  • Temporarily relocate the Community Center, Town maintenance building, and Opera House. Temporarily remove tennis courts and school park.
  • Excavate free product and soil exceeding cleanup levels.
Excavate areas surrounding the 5th Street bridge
  • Excavate contaminated soils exceeding cleanup levels at the south abutment of the 5th Street bridge, including Town right-of-ways, Wheatley, and Goranson properties.
  • Excavate in-water using a small scale cofferdam during the fish window (typically July and August).
  • Temporarily close the 5th Street bridge to allow crews to work near and under the bridge abutment.
  • Reroute vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Access to town will be from Old Cascade Highway while the bridge is closed.
Excavate under the Cascadia Inn
  • Excavate contaminated soil under west side of building with concentrations exceeding cleanup levels.
  • Reroute two-way vehicle and pedestrian traffic to south side of Railroad Avenue.
Remediate the east end of the hydraulic control and containment system (HCC)
  • Remove free product and contaminated soils exceeding cleanup levels using either large diameter borings or excavation. Special removal in this area is required due to the limited extent of impacted soil and proximity to eastern gate of HCC and railroad tracks.
  • Extend HCC system further east to contain contamination on the rail yard.
  • Reroute two-way vehicle and pedestrian traffic to north side of Railroad Avenue.
Excavate shallow areas of the rail yard
  • Excavate soils within two feet of the surface on the Skykomish Library property containing concentrations of lead, arsenic, PCBs or petroleum exceeding cleanup levels.
  • Excavate soils within two feet of the surface on rail yard containing concentrations of petroleum exceeding rail yard cleanup levels.
  • Additional excavation may occur on rail yard if possible.
