Skykomish cleanup schedule

Cleanup work begins at the East Wetland [7/28/10]

BNSF Railway and the Department of Ecology completed another year of significant environmental cleanup in 2009 in Skykomish, Washington. Cleanup began in June 2006 with the Interim Action. In 2007, BNSF and Ecology finalized plans for the remainder of cleanup in Skykomish. The Cleanup Action Plan, part of a consent decree, guides the entire cleanup in Skykomish.

This multi-year cleanup is conducted in phases concentrated in different parts of town. Major cleanup activities have included investigational activities, temporarily relocating houses and buildings, and excavating contaminated soils. Detailed information on each year’s cleanup can be found under Cleanup Activities.

Cleanup activities in 2010 will include temporarily relocating buildings to allow excavation of contaminated soils, Former Maloney Creek cleanup and restoration and cleanup of the 5th Street bridge abutment. BNSF and Ecology will continue to work closely with the Town of Skykomish to address impacts, obtain input and keep people informed during the implementation of cleanup plans.

This web site provides information and updates during cleanup activities. Check back often for updates and new information. Additional information on the overall cleanup project can be found in the background and documents sections of the web site.
